FDA Warns Yaz Manufacturer About Quality Control Issues

The United States Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to Bayer warning about testing problems with the key ingredient, drospirenone, used in the popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin.  The FDA had uncovered these quality control problems at Bayer’s plant in Germany, where it manufactures drospirenone.  The birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin are Bayer’s top-selling pharmaceutical drug, with global sales of over $1.8 billion.

The FDA’s concern involved Bayer’s decision to report quality control test results based on an averaging of sample data, instead of reporting individual test results.
